Our Mission
The Foundation for Leadership Education’s (FLE) primary objectives are to implement and promote educational curriculum which can be adopted by all schools in Beaufort County, that will provide a foundation in values and skills from which students are empowered to lead themselves and others in a way that creates positive change. FLE also proudly maintains the Lowcountry Lifetime Achievement Awards program and the Lighthouse Scholarship award.
The Foundation for Leadership Education’s Executive Director, Penny Abbott, was interviewed recently on the School on a Mission podcast (Season 4, Episode 1) to discuss the foundation’s efforts to help grow emerging leaders in grades K - 12th and develop intergenerational relationships in our Beaufort community.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP spotlight:
The Foundation for Leadership Education is proudly partnering with Bridges Preparatory School to sponsor and implement the iLead leadership development program for grades 6 - 12th for the upcoming school year. This student-driven curriculum fosters real-world leadership and life skills through meaningful conversations and peer-led growth.
FLE is thrilled that the iLead program will reach over 1,000 students at Bridges Prep for the 2026-2027 school year, helping develop young emerging leaders in our community.
FLE iLead partner, K - 5th graders
The Foundation for Leadership Education is proudly partnering with Boys and Girls Club of the Lowcountry to implement the iLead KIDS leadership development program for grades K - 5th, reaching over 350 students in local public schools in Beaufort County.
iLead is a values based leadership curriculum which uses the power of peer-to-peer connection to deliver transformational principles to students. With an adult facilitator, students lead one another in learning, reflection, sharing and self-evaluation throughout a multi-tiered set of core value lessons designed to teach students to solve problems and serve people in their community.
The Foundation for Leadership is proudly partnering with Beaufort Academy to continue their iLead implementation for the 2026 - 2027 school year. Beaufort Academy successfully piloted the iLead program for their Kindergarten - 5th graders last school year and had such a positive response that they want to continue with the program and include a more complex curriculum for their 6th grade students. Upper school students will experience a more project based curriculum, allowing students to engage in hands-on activities that build deep conceptual understanding and real-world skills.
